You don’t often come across V4s in cars. There was the Ford one used in the Saab 96 and....the other Ford one. Yes, they did two at the same time. The Cologne, from, er...Cologne and the Essex, from....Essex. By coincidence, kind of, as Ford UK called many of their engines after English counties.

Don’t forget the Lancia V4!

Ah, but Lancia did only the one. Admittedly an unusual one!

I recalled the existence of a modular J.A.P.-powered GN racer with a V8, so naturally assumed that J.A.P. V4s existed as well - and indeed they did:

There’s also a Soviet era car with an air cooled V4. In production numbers it’s the best selling V4 engined vehicle as 3.4 million were made during its 34 year long production run.
Here’s a MeMZ 965 powering a 60's Zaporozhets ZAZ-965AE.
The second is a ZAZ-966

And here in the US we know the Cologne as the 2.9-4.0L V6 that served in the Ranger, Scorpio, Explorer, and Mustang.
And the Essex is the head gasket-eating 3.8 that was in nearly every RWD Ford car from the 80s and 90s, Taurus, Windstar, and in 4.2l form, the F-series truck and Freestar van.

Two different Essexes, oddly enough.

Related to the inline v6 I see in so many bmws on Craigslist

I think that referred to Essex, Ontario - right next to Windsor...

The Taunus was a car to which a V4 was indeed fitted, amongst other possibilities.

My bike has a V4. Can I be part of the weird kids club?

Were they not popular because they are oddly balanced?

That, and they probably cost more. Unless you really must have something very compact there’s no need for a V4 in a car. Interestingly the Cologne V4 was originally designed by Ford US who decided against it and transferred it to Cologne, who in turn derived a V6 from it.
